Haltwhistle Burn Citizen Science

Lead organisation: Newcastle University (Academic)

A project which has demonstrated the feasibility, reliability, value and sustainability of citizen science for catchment hydrology and natural flood management. It has demonstrated how local people can provide valuable evidence and take ownership of their local river system, which multiple national and international environmental policies/frameworks are working towards.

Policy uptake explanation

Key objectives include establishing priorities within the Haltwhistle Burn Catchment, engaging with the local community, monitoring, modelling and using established intervention (natural runoff management) techniques which will assist with managing runoff. In turn this will lead towards the development of a Catchment Management Plan for Haltwhistle Burn.
